The Naughty List

Series Intro

Calgary Cinematheque is rewinding to the 1990s to the golden age of the erotic thriller, showcasing the decade’s most provocative, stylish, and scandalous films. This holiday season, embrace your wicked side and enjoy being on Santa’s naughty list. These films share DNA with the smoky, shadow drenched world of 1940s film noir, but censorship and cultural norms of the era kept those movies restrained. Once those censorship handcuffs finally came off, the genre erupted: the content grew bolder, steamier, as filmmakers dared to depict what audiences of the past could only imagine. For a brief, blazing moment, this subgenre conquered Hollywood, generating millions with each new release and setting pop culture on fire. Boundary pushing moments in films like Basic Instinct made these movies some of the most talked about of the period. But by the 2000s, the bubble had burst. Pushback from retailers like Blockbuster against NC-17 releases cut short the profitability of these movies and so the erotic thriller stopped attracting A-list stars and no longer delivered the box office punch it once did. Calgary Cinematheque invites you back to those halcyon days when mainstream Hollywood pushed boundaries and good taste and directors like Verhoeven and Kubrick explored the darker sides of power and sex. We're pleased to present these movies back on the big screen, just in time for the holidays.
Basic Instinct (1992)

Basic Instinct (1992)

Catherine, a novelist with an insatiable sexual appetite, becomes a prime suspect when her boyfriend is brutally murdered -- a crime she had described in her latest story.

Curation Notes

Basic Instinct was the most talked about film of 1992, and while most of the buzz centered around the most famous leg crossing scene in movie history, the film has far more to offer than that one moment. Basic Instinct pushed the erotic thriller to unprecedented heights; never before had mainstream American audiences been confronted with such a potent fusion of sexuality and violence.

Directed by Dutch provocateur Paul Verhoeven (RoboCop, Showgirls, Starship Troopers), the movie begins as a detective story about an unsolved murder filled with complex, morally slippery characters. Michael Douglas, returning to the genre he helped popularize in Fatal Attraction, is investigating the brutal killing of an aging rock star, and all signs point to the victim’s girlfriend - Sharon Stone in a career defining role. This was a movie destined to rise or fall on her performance, and she delivered something electric. In lesser hands, Basic Instinct might have faded into obscurity, but Stone and Douglas give performances so sharp and commanding that the film towers above its peers and cements itself as a defining pillar of the genre, unleashing a wave of imitators that flooded the decade to come.

Bound (1996)

Bound (1996)

Corky, a tough female ex-convict working on an apartment renovation in a Chicago building, meets a couple living next door, Caesar, a paranoid mobster, and Violet, his seductive girlfriend, who is immediately attracted to her.

Curation Notes

The erotic thrillers of the 90s mostly depicted their subjects through a heteronormative lens — but Bound didn’t just break the mold, it blew it apart. Join us for a night of pure, pulse pounding queer cinema as we present this trailblazing classic. The Wachowskis deliver a lesbian love story crackling with neo noir danger and erotic heat, a film that slinks between genres and dominates both.

Gena Gershon plays an ex-con hired to fix up a dingy apartment. Next door lives Jennifer Tilly, a mobster’s girlfriend with a voice like velvet and a gaze sharp enough to cut glass. One chance encounter in an elevator sparks instant chemistry. But the erotic tension is only half the thrill. Equally gripping is the crime plot woven through the film. The two lovers hatch a plan to steal $2 million from the mob, and as their scheme unfolds, we’re pulled deeper into their world, as each obstacle tightens the tension like a rope coiling around the audience until the Wachowskis snap it loose with an explosive conclusion.

Bound was the first feature film from the siblings who would go on to create The Matrix. Though it was a mild box office performer, critics adored it; and it has gone on to become a queer cinema cult classic. Drawing inspiration from Billy Wilder and classic noir, the Wachowskis

crafted a film years ahead of its time — one that shattered boundaries the moment it hit the

screen.

Cruel Intentions (1999)

Cruel Intentions (1999)

Slaking a thirst for dangerous games, Kathryn challenges her stepbrother, Sebastian, to deflower their headmaster's daughter before the summer ends. If he succeeds, the prize is the chance to bed Kathryn. But if he loses, Kathryn will claim his most prized possession.

Curation Notes

Set in upscale New York and filmed in stunning locations, the movie surrounds you with

beautiful people doing deliciously ugly deeds. A remake of the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons —

itself adapted from the 1782 French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses — the story trades aristocratic France for the glossy, privileged world of 1990s Manhattan. The plot centers on two wealthy, promiscuous step-siblings who spend their carefree days using sex and corruption as entertainment, never pausing to consider the consequences.

Ryan Phillippe plays the rich dilettante bored with his successes, with Sarah Michelle Geller as the scheming step-sister who propose a challenge he can't resist, one she's certain he can't win: If he can persuade a young and innocent moral crusader, played by Reese Witherspoon, to sleep with him, he wins the prize he’s always wanted but never attained: sex with his stepsister. As the game unfolds, relentless schemes and double dealings become less of a threat than the possibility of true love, and the inevitable tragedy it leads to.

Guiding us through this wicked tale is one of the decade’s most memorable soundtracks. Packed with ’90s classics from The Counting Crows, Fatboy Slim, and Placebo, the film builds to a perfect emotional crescendo with The Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony,” a needledrop that has become iconic in its own right.

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

After Dr. Bill Harford's wife, Alice, admits to having sexual fantasies about a man she met, Bill becomes obsessed with having a sexual encounter. He discovers an underground sexual group and attends one of their meetings -- and quickly discovers that he is in over his head.

Curation Notes

Grab your mask, loosen your inhibitions, and let Calgary Cinematheque guide you into the shadowy allure of Stanley Kubrick’s final film - an erotic odyssey which invites you to wander alongside Tom Cruise as he drifts into a world of masked strangers, forbidden rituals, and a password you absolutely must remember: Fidelio. It’s the perfect antidote to holiday cheer — a film that unwraps desire, mystery, and danger with every slow, deliberate frame.

Adapted from the 1926 novella Dream Story, Eyes Wide Shut became the final erotic thriller of the decade — and arguably the most anticipated. Rumors swirled for years about its secretive production and its provocative content. Expectations only intensified when Kubrick passed away shortly after finishing the film, making it his last cinematic statement. Casting real life power couple Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman added an undeniable layer of voyeuristic curiosity — audiences couldn’t help wondering how much of their onscreen intimacy reflected their offscreen marriage.

The story follows a married New York couple whose relationship is shaken after a late night, drug tinged confession. What unfolds over the next 48 hours is a journey fueled by jealousy, wounded pride, and a desperate need to reclaim control, leading to a clandestine gathering of the wealthy elite, a ritualistic masked ceremony that will push the husband far beyond the boundaries of his comfortable life.

For all its psychological tension, Eyes Wide Shut is surprisingly cozy. Kubrick drenches the film in Christmas atmosphere: glowing trees, vintage lights, warm interiors, and the soft hum of holiday décor. He shoots Cruise drifting through a cold, dreamlike 1990s New York with such precision that we feel like we’re walking beside him, wrapped in the same eerie winter glow. It’s the perfect film to close the series — unsettling, mesmerizing, and strangely comforting. By the time the credits roll, you may find yourself adding Eyes Wide Shut to your annual holiday rotation, right alongside the more traditional seasonal classics.
